Zinedine Zidane’s decision to quit as Real Madrid head coach left the Spanish giants scrambling to find someone capable of filling the French legend’s shoes, and Los Blancos have turned the very man ZIdane replaced when he started his title-running in in charge.
Real Madrid has hired Carlo Ancelotti as new manager on Monday, reuniting with the Italian boss six years after his stint at the club was ended after just two seasons.
Ancelotti, who was most recently the manager for English Premier League side Everton, steps in to replace Zidane, who quit as Real Madrid manager citing a lack of support from team president Florentino Perez.
Ancelotti returns to Madrid six years after leaving. He enjoyed a successful two seasons at the club, helping guide the team to 2013-2014 UEFA Champions League title, Copa Del Rey, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup titles during his tenure.
Unfortunately for Ancelotti, a failure to win a major trophy in 2015, and two straight seasons without a La Liga title, led Real Madrid’s board to fire him and replace him with his assistant at the time, Zidane, who went on to guide Real Madrid to three consecutive Champions League titles during the first of two stints in charge.
Ancelotti first took charge in 2013, replacing Jose Mourinho. As he arrives for his second go-round he takes over a Real Madrid team at a crossroads, built around an aging nucleus featuring Luka Modric, Toni Kroos and Casemiro. Sergio Ramos’ future at the club is uncertain, though Real Madrid has reportedly lined up David Alaba as a defensive leader.
Real Madrid is expected to be active on the transfer market this summer, and has been linked to Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland and Harry Kane.
