The International Champions Cup 2019 launch is well underway and, as we celebrate the best parts of soccer, it's important also to tackle some of the issues and, in particular, racism.
At 107 Grand Street, NY, Mark W. Wright was joined by a panel of experts to discuss The Ugly Side of the Beautiful Game.
Joining Wright was Briana Scurry, a FIFA World Cup winner and two-time Olympic gold medalist with the US Women's National Team. Briana is now the assistant coach of the Washington Spirit.
Cobi Jones, the all-time leader for US Men's National Team caps with 164 and a former Premier League star, is also on the panel, along with former West Ham United and Newcastle United goalkeeper Shaka Hislop.
Wright from The Undefeated, ESPN’s premier platform for exploring the intersections of race, sports and culture, moderated the panel. A former executive editor of Soccer Junior magazine, Wright covers soccer and historically black colleges and universities for the three-year-old platform.
The panel gave an in-depth insight into what it was like to face racism and intolerance on the pitch and how leagues and players are committed to eradicating these issues.
