The 2018 International Champions Cup started with a 1-0 victory for Borussia Dortmund over Premier League champions Manchester City at Soldier Field, Chicago.
Mario Götze's 28th-minute penalty proved the difference at the home of the Chicago Bears in a closely contested game.
Manchester City gave a debut to new signing Riyad Mahrez following his switch from Leicester City while Jack Harrison, formerly of New York City FC, was also included in Pep Guardiola's starting XI.
New Borussia Dortmund coach Lucien Favre named a strong starting XI which included US men's national team star Christian Pulisic, as well as Götze, Sebastian Rode, Marcel Schmelzer, Ömer Toprak and new signing Marwin Hitz in goal.
After a quiet opening period the game burst into life after 26 minutes when Pulisic, who had been afforded a hero's welcome, was brought down in the Manchester City penalty area.
World Cup winner Götze took the resulting spot kick, beating Manchester City captain Claudio Bravo with a well-taken penalty.
Manchester City had a chance to respond before half time when Brahim Diaz and Phil Foden combined well to set up Harrison. But the Englishman's effort was off target.
Borussia Dortmund very nearly doubled their lead early in the second half but Philipp Max's effort was ruled out for offside.
Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart had to be at his best to deny the Bundesliga side a second midway through the second half, reaching to push away Mahmoud Dahoud's firm strike.
Guardiola's side pushed hard to find an equaliser while the Borussia Dortmund threatened to extend their lead but neither could force their a way through in the closing stages with Dortmund kicking off the 2018 International Champions Cup with a win.
