Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi won't meet in the UEFA Champions League after Friday's draw for the quarter and semi-finals was made, unless Juventus and FC Barcelona both make it to the final in Madrid.
If Juventus can beat Ajax – the conquerors of Real Madrid – and the winner of the other quarter-final tie between Premier League leaders Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur, the Bianconeri will make the final on June 1.
On the other side of the draw, FC Barcelona take on Manchester United, who made it into the quarter-finals after a historic comeback against Paris Saint-Germain. If the reigning LaLiga champions win that tie they face off against one of FC Porto or Liverpool.
The Messi vs Ronaldo narrative isn’t the only eye-catching possibility. City head coach Pep Guardiola could come up against Barcelona, his former employers, or against his Premier League rivals Liverpool in the final.
There’s a chance the final is also a Manchester derby while a match-up between Juventus and Liverpool would be a repeat of the 1985 European Cup Final.
