Let’s check in on the Americans in Europe before most of them return back to the states for their Concacaf Nations League matches against Cuba and Canada.
Christian Pulisic: The 21-year-old impressed yet again last weekend when he scored his fourth goal for the club in a 2-1 win against Watford. His cunning near post run in the 55th minute was met by a Tammy Abraham cross and his composed finish proved yet again that Pulisic can become a consistent producer of good chances and goals. In Chelsea’s thrilling three-goal comeback in Champions League against Ajax this Tuesday, Pulisic played the full 90 minutes. They host Crystal Palace this Saturday in the Premier League.
DeAndre Yedlin: Yedlin started and went the distance for the fourth straight match this weekend against West Ham in a 3-2 win. It wasn’t his best showing overall but he did almost score a goal early in the second half if it weren’t for VAR ruling it out due to offside. Newcastle now have one loss in their last four matches and they host Bournemouth on Saturday.
Sergiño Dest: Dest had a tough week as he didn’t see the field in either of their matches against Zwolle or Chelsea. He is expected to start this Sunday against FC Utrecht, but if he doesn’t it just means he will be 100% fresh for the USMNT’s matches against Cuba and Canada.
Josh Sargent: The 19-year-old didn’t get the start against Freiburg last weekend but did come off of the bench to appear for 22 minutes. He’s not guaranteed a spot in the starting lineup this weekend at Mönchengladbach, but it will be interesting to see if he’s earned that in training this week.
Zack Steffen: Steffen got another 90 minutes last weekend against Köln and earned his second clean sheet of the season. But he did pick up an injury and wasn’t included in the USMNT squad for the upcoming international break due to knee tendinitis. Full details on his injury aren’t clear yet and he will surely be evaluated during the international break.
John Brooks: Brooks has now started and played the full 90 minutes in back-to-back league matches after a long absence due to injury. This past weekend he played the full 90 minutes in a 3-0 loss at Borussia Dortmund and he will face Bayer Leverkusen this Sunday. He is expected to start and be fully healthy for the upcoming international break.
Tyler Boyd: Boyd only recently entered the USMNT fold after a successful sting in Portugal for the last few seasons. Originally a prospect out of New Zealand, Boyd now plays for Besiktas in Turkey. The winger has played seven matches this season for Besiktas, with his lone goal coming on Thursday in the Europa League against Braga. He has been selected for the USMNT squad for their matches against Cuba and Canada.
Weston McKennie: Much like Brooks, McKennie is back to playing 90 minutes after a bit of time away due to injury. He played the full 90 minutes last weekend against Augsburg, completing the most passes with the highest passing percentage. Schalke host Fortuna Dusseldorf this Saturday in what would have been a faceoff of two Americans in McKennie and Steffen, but Steffen will miss out due
