8 stars most likely to move clubs in January transfer window

By Matt Gault, Football Whispers

With Chelsea already securing a big-money move for Borussia Dortmund and USMNT star Christian Pulisic, this January transfer window is set to be full of excitement.

As clubs across Europe look to bolster their squads for the second half of the season and MLS sides aim to boost their rosters ahead of the 2019 campaign, there is plenty going on.

It can be hard to keep up with so we’ve run through the players most likely to be on the move this month.

Álvaro Morata

It hasn’t quite happened for the Spanish striker following his move from Real Madrid to Chelsea in the summer of 2017.

Having helped Los Blancos to a LaLiga and UEFA Champions League double before he left, the 26-year-old has struggled to consistently fire for the Blues.

With 24 goals in 72 games, it’s been far from a disaster though and it’s clear Morata can revive his career elsewhere, with Sevilla and Atlético Madrid mentioned as possible destinations.

The Spain international shone in last summer’s International Champions Cup, his sharpness in attack contributing to Pedro’s goal against Inter. Here’s hoping he recaptures his confidence soon.

Michy Batshuayi

Another player on Chelsea’s books, the Belgian is set to find new employers after Valencia confirmed that the forward’s season-long loan will be cut short.

Batshuayi joined Chelsea from Marseille but was sent on loan to Borussia Dortmund last season, where impressed with nine goals in 14 appearances.

However, he hasn’t been able to replicate that form at Valencia and could be set for a move to one of the Blues’ Premier League rivals. Everton are credited with an interest in signing the 25-year-old on a permanent basis.

Julian Weigl

The 23-year-old, regarded as one of the most promising young midfielders in the German game, looks set to clinch a lucrative move to Paris Saint-Germain.

According to Le Parisien, Borussia Dortmund man could become the latest exciting addition to Thomas Tuchel’s squad at Les Parisiens as they plot European dominance.

Weigl has five caps for the German national team and would offer intelligence and positional sense to the spine of the French champions.

Nicolò Barella

Widely tipped to be the Spaniard’s replacement at Chelsea, Tuttomercato claim Barella has turned down a move to Stamford Bridge for family reasons.

Although the Blues were willing to meet Cagliari’s asking price, the 21-year-old would prefer to stay in Italy.

Napoli now appear to be the frontrunners for the highly rated Italy international.

Denis Suárez

The Barcelona midfielder looks set to leave the club with Arsenal leading the race for his signature.

As per The Telegraph, the Gunners are hoping to complete a loan deal for the 25-year-old, who played some of the best football of his career under Arsenal boss Unai Emery during their time together at Sevilla.

Suárez featured for Barca in last summer’s International Champions Cup, starting their clash with eventual tournament champions Tottenham Hotspur at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.

Gonzalo Higuaín

Another intriguing transfer rumour involving Chelsea, who look as though they’ll be the busiest of the Premier League’s top six in this window.

With uncertainty over Morata’s future, Maurizio Sarri is keen to secure the services of Higuaín, who is currently on loan at AC Milan from Juventus.

The 31-year-old Argentine has reportedly held talks over joining the Blues on loan for the remainder of the season. Higuain was devastating under Sarri at Napoli, setting a Serie A record with 36 goals in 35 games during the 2015/16 season.

Mousa Dembélé

The powerful Belgian midfielder looks set to bring the curtain down on his spell with Tottenham after the club accepted a bid from Chinese Super League outfit Beijing Guoan, as per The Guardian.

Dembélé joined Spurs from Fulham in 2012 and made almost 250 appearances for the north Londoners.

Spurs are not expected to secure a direct replacement for the 31-year-old in this window.

Miguel Almirón

The Atlanta United star is generating considerable interest from clubs in England during the MLS off-season.

According to The Guardian, Newcastle United are among the club interested in the Paraguay playmaker, whose sparkling performances propelled Atlanta to the MLS Cup in 2018.

A two-time MLS All-Star, the 24-year-old would inject excitement and creativity into whatever club he joins. With Newcastle struggling down in 15th in the Premier League table, the Magpies could certainly use Almirón’s match-winning prowess.
