August 3, Manchester United v AC Milan
Rightly regarded as European royalty, seven-time European Cup winners AC Milan will be returning to America this summer to play in the 2019 edition of the International Champions Cup.
The Rossoneri were involved in one of the most memorable matches of the 2018 tournament when they played out an epic penalty shootout with Manchester United at the StubHub Center in Carson, CA, which saw both teams’ goalkeepers take spot kicks!
Gennaro Gattuso’s men also faced off against Tottenham Hotspur at the U.S Bank Stadium, MN, and snatched a last-minute winner in their final game of the competition to defeat FC Barcelona at the Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, CA.
Benefitting from additional firepower this year, Milan will be looking to build on last summer’s victory over the LaLiga giants and boast a roster full of exciting attacking talent.
Overview
Their impressive pedigree domestically and on the continent means Milan are one of the most feared clubs in Europe. In recent transfer windows they’ve recruited well and the roster they’ve pieced together is highly impressive.
Milan's new head coach will have a balanced squad at his disposal; a defensive unit made up of Italy’s brightest stars, including goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, captain Alessio Romagnoli and defender Mattia Caldara, is complemented by the talents Milan have going forward.
In Lucas Paquetá, the man tipped to be the heir to Rossoneri great Kaká, they have a player capable of turning any match on its head in the blink of an eye while January addition Krzysztof Piątek has scarcely stopped scoring since moving to San Siro from Genoa.
The 2019 International Champions Cup gives the Rossoneri the opportunity to test themselves against the very best.
History
Milan have dazzled spectators throughout the decades. The great Arrigo Sacchi guided the Italian giants to back-to-back European Cup victories at the end of the 1980s with a team littered with stars including Marco van Basten, Ruud Gullit, Frank Rijkaard, Paolo Maldini and Franco Baresi.
They dominated Europe during the mid-2000s, reaching three European Cup finals in five years. Carlo Ancelotti’s team was the envy of world soccer with a midfield made up of Andrea Pirlo, Gennaro Gattuso, Clarence Seedorf and Kaká. Ahead of those four, the prolific Andriy Shevchenko and Hernan Crespo reigned supreme.
To go alongside their seven European triumphs, Milan have won 18 Serie A titles, a number only Juventus can better. They last lifted the Scudetto in 2011 with Zlatan Ibrahimović spearheading the team.
Stadium – San Siro
With a capacity of 80,018, San Siro is the largest stadium in Italy and the tenth largest in Europe. Milan share it with city rivals Inter and have done since 1947. However, for the first 21 years of its existence, it was AC Milan’s stadium.
San Siro was selected to host matches at the 1934 and 1990 FIFA World Cup finals as well as the 1980 UEFA European Championships. It’s also hosted four European Cup finals – most recently in 2016 when Real Madrid beat city rivals Atlético de Madrid.
Key Players
Lucas Paquetá – Courted by a host of Europe’s elite, Paquetá chose AC Milan to follow in the footsteps of his boyhood hero – Kaká.
He marked his debut in Serie A with an audacious rainbow flick and, not long after, grabbed an assist during the 2-0 Coppa Italia victory over Napoli. He’s a player who puts smiles on the faces of those who watch him.
Krzysztof Piątek – Signed as a direct replacement for Gonzalo Higuaín, the former Genoa man wasted no time endearing himself to the Milan faithful with two goals on his full debut.
He followed that by scoring in the next three matches. The clinical forward, who cost a reported $35million, scores a variety of goals and comes alive when the ball is in the penalty area.
Gianluigi Donnarumma – Not yet 21, the Italian shot-stopper seems to have been around forever, so it’s easy to forget how young he is.
Donnarumma has amassed more than 150 appearances for the Rossoneri and continues to deliver performances far beyond his young years. A leader for this young Milan side, it takes something special to beat him.
Ones to Watch
Patrick Cutrone – He caught the eye during the 2017 International Champions Cup with two goals during AC Milan’s 4-0 victory over FC Bayern.
Alongside Piątekhe’s a constant threat and a real goalscorer. The Italy international is a poacher in the penalty area and is a bit of a throwback to a traditional No.9.
Alessio Romagnoli – The 24-year-old was appointed Rossoneri captain at the start of last season following Leonardo Bonucci’s return to Juventus, indicating quite how highly head coach Gattuso viewed the central defender.
Romagnoli, who started his career with Italian rivals AS Roma, made his debut for Italy in 2016 and looks set to be a mainstay at the heart of the Azzurri’s defence, as well as Milan’s, for years to come.
