The The 2019-2020 European season is one that won’t soon be forgotten, what with the COVID-19 pandemic threatening to wipe out the entire campaign before leagues across Europe worked to save what they could of the season.
Before the pandemic, there were already teams forging memorable campaigns, including Liverpool with its runaway title chase, and Bayern Munich, which went into the new year already looking like an unstoppable force.
Not every team handled life after the pandemic well. Barcelona faltered and faded, as did Serie A title challenger Lazio. Real Madrid impressed when play returned in Spain, as did Atletico Madrid.
The Champions League tournament itself was a thrilling one, with the single-game format leading to some upsets and plenty of drama, but the seemingly inevitable crowning of Bayern Munich as champion still took place.
There is no debating that Bayern was the best team in Europe this past season, but ranking the rest of the continent’s elite is a much tougher proposition.
