TLA Worldwide and TEG Live are thrilled to announce Spain’s Atlético de Madrid as the fourth and final team for the 2016 International Champions Cup Australia, presented by Audi which is taking place from 23-29 July at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground.
The Spanish side will join fellow European powerhouses Juventus Football Club and Tottenham Hotspur, along with current A League champions Melbourne Victory, for the Australian leg of the global club competition.
Atlético de Madrid will play high flying Tottenham Hotspur in the third and final game of the tournament at the MCG on Friday 29 July kicking off at 8pm.
With Atlético de Madrid now confirmed, the 2016 International Champions Cup, presented by Audi will bring together three of Europe’s best teams with Juventus currently 1st in Serie A, Tottenham Hotspur 2nd in the EPL and Atletico de Madrid 2nd in La Liga after beating Real Madrid at the weekend.
One of the most successful clubs in Spanish football history, Atlético de Madrid have won ten domestic La Liga titles, ten Copa del Rey trophies and two Europa League titles.
In the 2013/14 season Atlético de Madrid broke the dominance of Lionel Messi at Barcelona and Cristiano Ronaldo at Real Madrid to sensationally win the La Liga title – the first time a club other than Barcelona or Real Madrid had won the league since 2004.
That same season Atlético de Madrid reached the pinnacle of European club football, the UEFA Champions League Final, only losing to Real Madrid after extra time in one of the most exciting finals in recent memory.
Victorian Minister for Tourism and Major Events and Minister for Sport, The Hon. John Eren MP, said the inclusion of Atlético de Madrid is another huge result for Australian football fans.
“The fans want the biggest European outfits in Melbourne, and that’s exactly what we’re delivering. Atlético de Madrid is a world-renowned brand and a powerhouse of the Spanish league,” he said.
“The biggest contests belong in the city that does them best. We put on a great spectacle last year when more than 220,000 fans packed the MCG over three great nights, and we can’t wait to do it again.”
Former Atlético de Madrid player and Argentinian legend, Diego Simeone, is the manager of the Spanish side and is widely considered to be one of the best managers in European football.
"The team and I can't wait to come and play in Melbourne and visit a country as exciting as Australia, sharing with the fans its passion for football." Simeone said.
“It’s fantastic to be part of such a high calibre tournament with some of the best teams in Europe and the A League’s most successful side, Melbourne Victory. This competition will form a key part of our pre-season training and will be a great opportunity for me to put my players through their paces ahead of the new season.”
Currently 2nd in La Liga and competing in the last 16 of the Champions League, Atlético de Madrid boast a host of international superstars including Antoine Griezmann. The France international is the club’s latest superstar striker, following in the footsteps of Sergio Aguero, Radamel Falcao and Diego Costa as the Spanish side’s leading man.
“It’s amazing to have the chance to play at the Melbourne Cricket Ground as part of our preparation for next season,” Griezmann said. “Hopefully we’ll have a packed out stadium cheering us on against Tottenham.”
Another superstar in the team is Spanish international Koke. The midfielder joined the Atlético de Madrid youth team at the age of 8 and has spent his entire career at the club, making nearly 250 appearances since his debut in 2009. Koke, 24, made his international debut for Spain in August 2013 and is likely to be part of the national squad for the European Championships in France.
"I'm really looking forward to coming down to Melbourne for the International Champions Cup Australia, presented by Audi," Koke said. "It will be a very important part of our pre-season and we look forward to seeing up close the passion with which Australian fans live football. It will be a great experience."
Ahead of his side meeting Atlético de Madrid in much-anticipated third and final match of the tournament, Tottenham Hotspur manager, Mauricio Pochettino, said the Spanish side would present an added challenge for his club ahead of the new season.
"The announcement of Atletico Madrid as the fourth team in the International Champions Cup Australia, presented by Audi is a great addition to this competition,” Mauricio said.
“Playing two of Europe's best teams in Melbourne will be a strong test for us and we hope to put on a great show for our fans in both matches as a way of thanking them for their incredible support throughout this and every season.”
As the presenting sponsor of the Australian leg of the tournament, Audi is delighted to welcome Atlético de Madrid as the fourth and final team for the 2016 edition.
“Football is a sport that generates huge passion in Australia, particularly amongst a number of Audi’s key target audiences. With Atlético de Madrid, Juventus and Tottenham Hotspur coming to Melbourne in July, fans will have the chance to watch some of the world’s finest football talent on Australian soil and we are proud to play a leading role in making this happen,” Mr Andrew Doyle, Managing Director, Audi Australia, said.
